Our history

Where It All Began

Every Becovic company traces its roots to two people: a young couple who left Montenegro for Chicago with little more than determination, and built a future one apartment building at a time.

In 1968, Mr. and Mrs. Becovic left Montenegro for Chicago and began investing in apartment buildings on the city’s North Side. They set out with three goals: take care of their residents, run every building responsibly, and become valued members of their community. Those principles shaped every decision that followed.

Nearly six decades later, the next generation of the Becovic family acquired the historic Laura Street Trio at the corner of Laura and Forsyth in Downtown Jacksonville, three landmarks that had waited decades for someone willing to bring them back. The distance between those first Chicago buildings and the Trio spans two generations, two states and six companies, yet the goals have never changed. Our company history tells the story of the years in between.

The family puts its name on the business.

By 1973 the family owned enough buildings to run them as a company, and gave it the Becovic name. Both this company and the Chicago one give 1973 as their founding year.

Apartments are still the main business, and Becovic Management Group runs them today.

Rogers Park, Edgewater and Uptown

Through the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s the family kept buying on the North Side, in the lakefront neighborhoods of Rogers Park, Edgewater and Uptown. Most of it was Chicago’s older housing stock: brick courtyard buildings and 1920s residential hotels.

Most of the Chicago company’s buildings are in those three neighborhoods today. It owns and manages more than 3,000 apartments across the city.

A supply house of their own

The family started Signature Supply in Chicago so its crews could turn apartments without waiting on a distributor’s truck. It supplied cabinets, countertops and fixtures to Becovic’s own buildings first, and began selling to other owners soon after.

In 2005 Muhamed Becovic founded Becovic Management Group of Indiana and took the family’s apartment business to Indianapolis. It managed more than 1,000 apartments within five years. Property and asset management, accounting and training now work out of the headquarters in Fishers.

Florida, and a taste for historic buildings

Becovic bought communities in Tallahassee and Bradenton and more in Jacksonville. Downtown Jacksonville had a cluster of historic towers that earlier owners had struggled to finish, and Becovic started buying them.

The Laura Street Trio

In August 2026, fifty-eight years after Mr. and Mrs. Becovic arrived in Chicago, Becovic won the Laura Street Trio at a court-ordered auction. The three buildings stand across Laura Street from The Barnett, and two weeks later Becovic bought The Carling and 11 East a few blocks away.

The family today

One Legacy, Carried Forward

A Becovic family photograph, taken beside a private jet on an airfield

Muhamed, Sal, Isa and Dino are the four sons of Mr. and Mrs. Becovic, and each grew up with the values their parents brought from Montenegro to Chicago. Today, that legacy lives on through three independent companies, and through the family itself.

Muhamed leads Becovic Companies and its six operating businesses from Jacksonville, FL, and Fishers, IN. Sal leads Becovic in Chicago, carrying on the family’s work in the North Side neighborhoods where his parents first invested: Rogers Park, Edgewater, Uptown and West Ridge. Isa leads Becovic Holdings Corporation, also based in Chicago, with properties across the city, near O’Hare, in Rockford and in the Quad Cities.

Dino holds what the brothers consider the most important role of all: caring for their parents and protecting the foundation on which everything was built. The companies may carry the Becovic name, but it is the family, and the care its members show one another, that gives the name its meaning.

Each company stands on its own, guided by its own leadership and vision. Yet all three share a name, a founding year and a beginning: the Chicago buildings Mr. and Mrs. Becovic purchased more than five decades ago, and the belief that a family name is worth building on.
